WHY I WROTE YIKES!

A lot of people helped me become an airline pilot. And that’s the same for a lot of people. It takes resilience, resources and a team effort to achieve a career in aviation. So I wrote YIKES!… to pay it forward. My goal– with your help–is to benefit 100 flight schools, Civil Air Patrol squadrons, and other STEM groups who are helping under-resourced young folks achieve their dreams of careers in aviation and aerospace.

By 2030, the aviation and aerospace industries will need:

  • over 30,000 new pilots in the U.S. and over 250,000 new pilots globally
  • over 130,000 new aviation mechanics in the U.S. and over 400,000 new AMTs globally
  • over 24,000 new Air Traffic Controllers in the United States alone, and
  • over 3,800 aerospace engineers

If it can’t attract a pool of talent from all areas of society to fill those jobs by 2030, the pace of retirements in all aviation industry sectors will stall the industry, possibly irreparably.

Get your copy of YIKES!… With the sale of one million copies, the Victor Kilo Fund will use the proceeds to buy up to 100 Redbird, full motion flight simulators and/or to create up to one hundred, $50,000 aviation/STEM scholarships for our STEM strategic partners to distribute. Altogether, support that will launch thousands of diverse aviation/aerospace careers.

ABOUT YIKES!

Hangar flying is a favorite pastime of many pilots. Swapping “fish tales,” judging the takeoffs and landings of other pilots, and sharing each other’s “yikes!” moments while sitting in the comfort and safety of a hangar or an FBO is a time-honored tradition—a way of passing along sage advice.

YIKES!… is just that. The stories in YIKES!… are true, taken from NASA reports—the FAA’s Aviation Safety Reporting System database—where pilots voluntarily and anonymously share their moments of bad judgment with the rest of us.  Combining humor with insightful analysis, I examined their stories in my General Aviation News column, “Human Factors.” The chapters in YIKES! are curated from my column. YIKES! is humorous-yet-educational, entertaining-yet-inspirational for pilots and non-pilots alike.

PRAISE FOR YIKES!

“I read this book, cover to cover, in one sitting. It spoke to me in a little voice that said, ‘Remember when that was us?’ JJ writes beautifully about the places every professional pilot of enough experience has been. If you want to be prepared before you go there, read this book.”
–Hans Yao, 737 Captain, Southwest Airlines

“I find that your book really contributes to Aeronautical Decision-Making in the most effective way. Thank you for such a thoughtful book!”
–James Aaron Modeste, FAA Part 141 Chief Flight Instructor
